Regularly vacuuming your mattress is the easiest way to remove this dirt and grime, which helps keep your mattress in good condition and makes it easier for you to get a good night’s sleep. You should also use a mattress protector to help keep your mattress clean and prevent the build-up of allergens, dust and bacteria.

Stains
A mattress can be easily stained, so if you see any spills or stains on your mattress, try to act quickly to get them removed before they set in. Coffee and tea spills, baby formula spit-up and urine stains are all very easy to get rid of, but blood and oily stains require a more intensive cleaning solution.
There are a lot of stain removal products on the market, but you don’t need to spend a fortune on them. In most cases, you’ll be able to make your own stain remover by mixing a solution of cold water and a little hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle.
Then, apply the cleaner to the stain, and blot it gently with a dry cloth. Repeat this process until the stain is gone.

If the stain still persists, use a different cleaning solution. For example, if the stain is urine-related, try a stain remover designed to deal with this type of odor.
You can use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to remove odor-causing stains from your mattress. This is an effective, environmentally-friendly deodoriser that works on both fresh and old stains.
Baking soda has a natural tendency to absorb moisture, so the longer you leave it on the mattress, the more effective it will be at removing any odors. Vacuum the area thoroughly to remove any traces of the baking soda.
Depending on the odor, you may want to sprinkle a bit of bicarb soda over the stain and let it sit for a few hours – this will help to neutralise any unpleasant odors and prevent them from returning.
Once the baking soda has dried, vacuum the area again to remove any remaining traces of it. You’ll also need to give the mattress a thorough cleaning to eliminate any other residue that might have been left behind by the baking soda.
Wash your mattress and bed linens as soon as possible after they’ve been used, and make sure they’re completely dry before making the bed again. This will help to prevent dust mites from settling into your bedding and triggering your allergies.
You should also wash your sheets and pillows on a regular basis, as they can trap a range of contaminants like dirt, dust and dander. These substances can irritate the nose, throat and eyes, causing asthma symptoms and other ailments.
